Acknowledgments This book grew out of a conference entitled The Exorbitant: Emmanuel Levinas Between Jews and Christians, organized by the editors, that was held at the University of Notre Dame from April 17 to April 19, 2005. It was made possible by the generosity of the Departments of English, Philosophy, and Theology, the Program in Religion and Literature, the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Nanovic Institute, the Notre Dame Holocaust Project, the Office of the Provost, and the Henkels Lecture series. Scott Moringiello provided expert assistance before, throughout, and after the conference. One of the pleasures of organizing the conference and editing the papers for this volume was working closely with Rabbi Michael A. Signer. Michael was involved in every stage of the book, and discussions with him made it a richer and stranger collection than it would otherwise have been. It is melancholy to have to say that Michael went to God on January 10, 2009, and will not see this book in print. The world of Jewish scholarship has lost a noble spirit, and the world of Jewish-Christian dialogue has lost one of its most articulate and passionate advocates.
