 notes Chapter 1: Ric 1. Many individuals wrote field notes over the course of this research. As mentioned in the text, i authored this particular excerpt, but many other excerpts throughout the book were authored by graduate student research assistants who were involved in the fieldwork for a period. in each phase of the study, the research was undertaken by an ethnographic team led by me and consisting of two to four graduate students. except for field notes i wrote and those attributed to LeAnne olson or Betty sias, graduate student researchers featured in chapter 6, the field notes throughout the book are attributed more generally to “a student” or“a researcher.”i elected to do this to avoid the confusion of including the names of so many different individuals throughout the story.Also, in team ethnography, when field notes and interview transcripts are considered shared property, often data excerpts are not attributed to a particular researcher. following standard guidelines for qualitative fieldwork (e.g., Bogdan and Biklen 2007), we included both description and reflections in our field notes, making sure to distinguish between descriptions of what we saw or heard and our own reflections. The girls in our study spoke almost exclusively about their moms when talking about care work and academic support, so we have focused on mothers in this section.At the same time, we know that not all families include mothers.
