During my time there, archived materials were only partially cataloged and, in some cases, were stored in unmarked boxes.The use of “Seth Box” and “Ancient Box” indicates a temporary nomenclature system devised in conjunction with this project. gewa’s archived records have since undergone recataloging. Materials referred to herein were found in nps Records, Boxes 6–10, 14–17, 19–20, 23; nps Records, Unprocessed Materials, Box 18; Memorial Association Records, Box 18; Ancient Box 6; and Seth Boxes 1, 3–6. “Central Administrative Files” refers to non-archived records still in circulation at the monument, and “Central Administrative Files (overflow)” refers to those of the above kept in vertical files in the visitor center basement. Beyond the monument, I consulted the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts Records (rg 66) at the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. rg 66 includes portions of the Wakefield National Memorial Association’s original records as well as important fac project files corresponding with work at the Birthplace.The National Archives Building also holds relevant materials in rg 79, the records of the National Park Service. A larger portion of relevant materials that are included within rg 79 and cited throughout is housed at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland. Cited correspondence particular to the nps’s Northeast Region relevant to the park’s first two decades is included within rg 79 at the National Archives, Mid-Atlantic Regional facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Finally, the Harpers Ferry Center (hfc) archives a variety of documents related to the park’s management and maintains Horace Albright’s film recordings of the early park along with other visual media at its Willow Springs facility in Charles Town, West Virginia.
