illustrations The frontispieces from the fourth edition, designed by Francis Hayman, engraved by Charles Grignion, and first included in the second edition (1748), are reproduced from a copy held privately; the title pages to volumes 1 and 2 of the fourth edition (London, 1755) are reproduced from a copy owned by O M Brack, Jr. The engravings by Thomas Rowlandson (after George Moutard Woodward and Henry Singleton), along with those by J. C. Stadler (after Samuel Collings), are reproduced from a collection listed as “Illustrations to Roderick Random” (London, 1792) and held by Harvard’s Houghton Library. The illustrations solely by Rowlandson, dated 1793, are cataloged individually in the Prints Collection at the Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University; they were apparently intended for the 1793 London edition of Roderick Random, published by J. Sibbald. Also from 1793 are four images from the Columbia University copy of a rival London edition printed for C. Cooke, three designed by Richard Corbould (engraved by Joseph Saunders, William Hawkins, and Charles Grignion ) and one by H. Hamilton (engraved by Hawkins).
