202 | Appendix B Corporation Charters This appendix contains the names of the privately owned joint-stock corporations that were chartered by the state of Connecticut to provide transportation services from the 1790s to the 1920s. During this time Connecticut chartered nearly five hundred transportation corporations. Included in the following lists are turnpike, toll bridge, plank road, railroad, horse railroad, street railway, ferry, canal, steamboat, and harbor and river improvement companies. The tables were compiled using the ‘‘Incorporations’’ section of A General Index to the Private Laws and Special Acts of the State of Connecticut, published by the Connecticut General Assembly (Special Act 541) in 1943. Transportation charters fall into three categories: highway, rail, and maritime . Within each category, companies are listed chronologically by the year of their original charter, with a reference to the volume and page of the Private Laws of the State of Connecticut where the charter can be found. To make each list as complete as possible, corporations named in the General Index were checked against similar lists published by others—in particular, turnpike corporations with Frederic J. Wood’s Turnpikes of New England; railroad corporations with Ronald D. Karr’s Rail Lines of Southern New England ; and horse railroad and street railway corporations with the Connecticut Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society’s Street Railways of Connecticut. A word of caution: company names changed often as a result of a reorganization or combination (rail corporations in particular) and at times these name changes resulted in a new charter, whereas at other times they did not. In addition, rail corporations formed under the general rail incorporation law of 1872 required no legislative charter, though some of these companies later secured one. None of these qualifications affect a large number of corporations, so the corporations listed in this appendix represent perhaps 90 percent or more of the transportation charters issued in Connecticut.
