75 cowards and fearless men A CHIPMUNK AND A RABBIT, concluding that their natural timidity was their best protection against the dangerous world about them, formed a partnership which they found advantageous. When they were looking for food, one of them would remain on guard while the other searched, and at the first unfamiliar scent from the brush, the first unexpected movement in the grass, he would call out to his companion and they would scamper to cover, lying there with wildly beating hearts until their world was a safe place to move about in once more. [ 146 ] One day a lion, who took a lordly interest in their welfare, said, "When you hunt in the future, come with me and feel no anxiety whatever, because I fear nothing that lives, and rm strong enough to protect you from your enemies." After that, the two animals hunted boldly with the lion until one day the three of them met a man with a gun. The chipmunk and the rabbit halted, trembled, and began backing away, but the fearless lion upbraided them. "Well, what are you afraid of this time?" he asked humorously. "Haven't you got me to protect you?" Then he roared and sprang into the clearing , but before he had a chance to strike down the hunter, the latter raised his rifle and fired, and the lion fell dead at his feet. The chipmunk and the rabbit did not wait to see more. They turned and ran desperately, while the bullets from the hunter's gun whistled about their ears. When they were safe again, the chipmunk said, "We were fools to hunt with the lion, because it's obvious now that there's no companion more dangerous than one without fear." [ 147 ] ...
