53 the traitorous jackal A JACKAL CAME TO THE farmers, the enemies of his kind, and said that he had repudiated his own people and from that day on he wanted to be thought of as a farmer, not as a jackal; but being a jackal in reality and familiar with secrets of his kind, he was of great help to the farmers, and as a result of his guidance, they were soon able to overthrow the jackals and very nearly exterminate them. [ 100 ] When they had achieved that result, the farmers began to look at the jackal more thoughtfully, for although he seemed as content with the outcome as they themselves were, the fact remained he was a jackal, after all, and not a farmer, and they were ill at ease with him. Finally they called a meeting to discuss the matter and decided that although they were under obligation to the jackal for his services it was to their interest now to destroy him too, pointing out with some justification that since his nature was what it was, he could not be trusted with their secrets either.
