Appendix: The Grantees and Their Allotments The appendix is composed of three parts.1 The ¤rst is a list by allotment of the grantees. It is derived from the list of allottees given to the secretary of the treasury by the society at the end of 1818 and an updated list, showing the allocation of the reserves and certain revisions to the initial distribution of principal allotments, furnished in 1825. The list is organized by allotment number and indicates in parentheses the acreage each allotment held. I have given the full names of the grantees, when known, and also an indication of their background. Domingans are identi¤ed by boldface type. The names of allottees from a military background (militia service excluded) are underlined. Those who joined the Champ d’Asile are italicized. And the names of those who set foot on the grant, however brie®y, are enclosed in brackets. The second part of the appendix consists of a reproduction of the allotment map drafted by Vine and Olive member Edouard Paguenaud. With it, the location of an individual’s allotment can be easily located. The third part provides biographical sketches, alphabetically organized, of all the Vine and Olive grantees. The same code used in the list of shareholders— indicating that a given grantee was a Domingan, military veteran, Champ d’Asile participant, or settler—is also employed in these biographical sketches. The information on which they are based comes from a wide range of archival and published sources too numerous to provide in detailed footnotes. The most important archival sources were the land records of the Tombeckbee Association at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C., the Kent Gardien Papers at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery, the French diplomatic correspondence at the Archive des Affaires Etrangères in Paris, the records of French consulates in the United States at the Centre des Archives Diplomatiques in Nantes, the records of the political police in the Archives Nationales in Paris, and the records of military personnel at the Archives de la Guerre in Vincennes.
