A project of this size and scope could not be taken on without assistance of commensurate size and scope. Fortunately, I had help equal to that challenge, and I am grateful for it. Foremost among those I want to thank is my colleague Donald Noble, who ¤rst broached the idea of codirecting an Alabama Symposium in honor of Tennessee Williams and who then brought his experience, patience , and good judgment to our combined efforts to make that symposium a successful reality. As I pulled together this collection, I had the able efforts of four outstanding graduate student research assistants in succession: ¤rst Lex Ames, then Don Gilliland and Dan Kaplan, and ¤nally, Stephanie Chatelain. All of my colleagues in the English Department at Alabama have proved encouraging and supportive along the way, particularly the chair, Sara D. Davis. I am especially grateful to the University of Alabama administration, ¤rst for continued funding and support from the provost, Dr. Nancy S. Barrett, for this and other Alabama symposia; and also for granting me a sabbatical leave to ¤nish editing this work.
