vii Acknowledgments I am the son of Lee Van Ham and Laurel Johnson, who are the children of children of immigrants to the United States of America. My father’s mother, Wilhelmina, was the granddaughter of Dutch immigrants who arrived in the mid-nineteenth century. The parents of Peter, my father’s father, emigrated from Holland in 1911. My mother’s father, Vernon, was the grandson of immigrants from northern Europe who came in the final quarter of the nineteenth century. My mother’s mother, Ellen, was the daughter of ethnic Germans who lived in Riga, Russia (now Latvia) and emigrated in the early 1900s. In countless and even unknowable ways, I am indebted to the yearnings, ambulations, labor, and love of these parents , and I thank them for their presence in my life. The early years of this project evolved under the guidance of five mentors in the academy: Barbara Babcock, Adele Barker, Malcolm Compitello , Alex Nava, and Karen Seat. Alison Goebel, Diane Wiener, Mike Mulcahy, Charlene Tuchovsky, Jeff Larson, and Sang Hea Kil provided important leads along the way.
