405 Appendix B: Cleaning the Foundations Data Set for Chapter 3 To clean the data set for chapter 3, we began with the Foundation Center’s data set of 124,844 grants for 2000–01. From this set, we focused only on grants whose primary purpose codes fell in the education category (that is, National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities codes beginning with B). Of the 25,591 grants in education, we then cut out grants to non-U.S. recipients (grants to recipients in Guam and Puerto Rico remained in the data set) and grants whose primary purpose codes were not related to K–12 education (that is, related to college, graduate, professional , or adult education). Several primary purpose codes included both K–12 and higher education grants: Alliances and advocacy, Education management/ technical aid, Education association, Education administration/regulation, Education research, Education public policy, Education single organization support, Education fund raising, Education equal rights, Education information services, Education public education, Education volunteer services, Education government agencies, Early childhood education, Child development education, Education bilingual programs, Education ESL programs, Libraries/library science, Libraries (school), Scholarships/financial aid, Student services & organizations, Education alumni groups, Education services, Drop-out prevention, Reading, Education testing, and Education community/cooperative. For these categories, we included only those grants with a secondary grant purpose code of Elementary /secondary education, Elementary school/education, Secondary school/education , or Elementary/secondary school reform.
