37 Brussels Sprouts Its image spreads out over the canvas like a spine turned upside down, the green pelvis freely splayed at the top of the page— women hunting for their favorites among multitudinous herbs, their skirts cut just above the knee: just enough to display a sense of freedom, more than any Victorian could have dreamed of. Outside, Sky stands dressed in its best blues after sunset—muscular clouds dipped in soot, unaccompanied desire beneath their white tops: almost aimless. The day has long since striven past on gaudy legs reaching upward forever, Saint Brigid even here in Pittsburgh making her way through the verdant cut of this campus. The green of brussels sprouts did not come through on the invitations as it does in the original, art from art losing something in translation, from gray to green: a longing for something real. ...
