This book originated at a conference at the German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington, D.C. We would like to thank Christof Mauch, the former GHI director, for co-chairing and providing the opportunity for this conference in the first place. We are grateful to the staff of the GHI, especially Bärbel Thomas and Christa Brown, for their most capable help in organizing the conference. We are also thankful to our co-convener Jennifer Price. Most of all, we owe a big thanks to all of the conference participants, whose contributions enriched the discussions tremendously. Unfortunately, we could not integrate all of their essays in this volume. This book took a long time to produce, and in the process we incurred many debts.
