203 notes on original source materials Some of the original source materials used in this book and cited in the notes came from newspaper clippings found in scrapbooks put together over the years by Richie “the Boot” Boiardo. He was an avid though amateur historian-unfortunately he often snipped off the names of newspapers and the dates of articles. The same is true of newspaper and magazine clippings collected by his daughter, Rosina“Rose”Boiardo Hanos. In most cases, Roger Hanos and I were able to track down the origin of these clippings ; a few articles eluded us, as did a few articles that came from the Newark Evening News morgue at the Newark Public Library, which contains a large scrapbook on the Boot and his son, Tony Boy, with clippings from the Newark Evening News and the Star-Ledger, many of them missing source identification and dates. The Newark Evening News morgue was given to Newark Public Library at the behest of author and historian John T. Cunningham when the newspaper went out of business in 1972. Included were 380 handwritten annual index volumes, 800,000 photos, and two million clippings. A Microsoft Access index to the subject headings of the clippings folders has 162,000 entries. Funds for microfilming the clippings and creating the N O T E S 204 Notes clippings-folders index were provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission , the New Jersey State Library, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The morgue is an invaluable, although oftentimes frustrating , resource for writers and historians. Most of the FBI files that served as source material for this book were accessed through the Freedom of Information/Privacy Act (FOIPA), Title 5, United States Code, Section 552/52a.
