We would like to acknowledge the many people who have provided support for us throughout this project. We both had the support of our institutional colleagues, who discussed ideas with us, encouraged us, questioned us, and pushed us to think about work and family in new and different ways. We also want to thank the graduate students (and former graduate students) who helped us over the years. They kept us organized, helped us to collect or transcribe data, and generally served as a sounding board for the many ideas we came up with as a result of our data collection and analysis. We would not have been able to complete this project without their help. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the American Association of University Women both provided funding for the data collection aspects of this project—and without their support we never would have been able to write this book.
