135 OFREASONANDFAITH OfReasonandFaith 10 OntheFormerCardinalJosefRatzinger I feltastrangetwingeofdelightwhenCardinalJosefRatz- ingerwaselectedpopeonApril24,2005.Thatwasbecause Ihadhadtheprivilegeofmeetinghimatapartyin1973while IwasstudyingattheUniversityofTübingenonaFulbright scholarship.ThefuturePopeBenedictXVIhadtaughttheology therebeforemovingtotheUniversityofRegensburgin 1972.Ofcourse,thereisnoreasonwhyheshouldremember me,butIcertainlyrememberhim.ProfessorRatzingermade adistinctimpressiononmewithhispenetratingeyesandsober demeanor.Hewasalreadyknownasabrillianttheologian whoseconservatismhadoriginallybeenfueledbypoliticaland culturaldisillusionmentwiththestudentmovementof1968. Thepoperemainsadamantabouttheneedtocounteractthe empoweringofreasonattheexpenseoffaith,secularismat theexpenseofspirituality,andtheEnlightenmentheritageat theexpenseofreligiousritual. Thisisthelegacyofmodernityandwhatmightbetermed “Enlightenmentfundamentalism”—thatis,abasicreliance onthesecular,liberal,andcriticalheritageoftheeighteenth century—whichsomeconsidertheprincipaldangertoWestern societies.Butthecurrentpontiffneverlackedasenseof nuance.HehascalledRomanCatholicismthefinestblendof reasonandfaith,eventhoughhehasalsotendedtohighlight 136 PEACEOUTOFREACH the“prepolitical,”orreligious,rootsofEuropeandtheneedto buildamoredoctrinallyunifiedCatholicChurch.Hisspeech ofSeptember13,2006,whichincludedcommentsaboutthe ProphetMuhammadandjihad(culledfromanobscureByzantine emperor)1 thatinsultedtheIslamiccommunity,may havebeenintendedonlytochallengeirrationalterroristshiding underthecloakofreligion,butitalsoservedthepractical purposeofinspiringprovincialforceswithinhisownreligious community.“InPursuitofPeace,”anarticlethatappearedin 2004whenthepopewasstillacardinal,providesanexceptional insightintohisgeneraloutlook.2 MyownviewsontheEnlightenmentanditsimpactarevery different.3 ThattheEnlightenmentlegacyhasbeenunableto eradicateprovincialism,imperialism,capitalistexploitation, andreligiousintolerancespeakstothewayitsradicalproject— alongwithitssocialistimplications—hasbeentruncated.The Enlightenmentethos,inmyview,hasinspiredvirtuallyevery majorpoliticalstruggleforsocialjusticeandhumanrights. Itsmajorphilosopherswereallopponentsofdogmatismand, whatevertheirownprejudices,thearbitraryexerciseofpower. Ialsothinkthatthemostradicallydemocraticsocietiesare thosethathavemostradicallydivorcedchurchfromstateand thattherealdangertohumanityhasneverbeenscience,let alonereason,butthepoliticalchoicesconcerningitsemployment .Thegenuinethreathasalwaysappearedwhenmythand intuitionwereinvokedascriteriaofjudgment,whenreason wasdenied,whentraditionwasembracedforitsownsake,and whenreligiousdogmadominatedthepublicsphere—thatis, whenintolerancewasstrongestandwhenthepossibilitiesfor ideologicalmanipulationfromabove,coupledwiththeunleashing ofthepassionsfrombelow,weregreatest.Uncritical faithratherthanreasonedreflection,mythratherthanscience, [3.17.28.48] Project MUSE (2024-04-24 21:26 GMT) 137 OFREASONANDFAITH obedienceratherthancriticalspeculation,andprejudicerather thanknowledgeremaintheenemiesoffreedom. “InPursuitofPeace”openswiththefuturepontiff’sreflections onD-dayandthesubsequentliberationofEuropefromthe Nazis.Whatresultedwasanunparalleledperiodofpeaceand prosperitywhoseframers(somewhatarbitrarilychosen),according toRatzinger,derivedtheirpoliticalmotivationsfrom theirChristianbeliefs.WiththehelpoftheMarshallPlanand themilitarybackingoftheUnitedStates,WesternEurope squaredoffagainstthecommunistbloc.Ratzingerisrightwhen henotesthattheliebornof“ideologicaltyranny”predominated underthecommunistsassurelyasithadpredominatedunder theNazis.Nevertheless,theworldlooksdifferentdepending onwhichsideoftheNorth-Southdivideoneisstanding. Leadersofallthe“greatpowers”thatbuiltthepostwar compactwerecomplicit—someperhapsmoreandothersperhaps lessthantheirpredecessorsandsuccessors—inshaping thenightmareofpovertyandinstabilitythatstillhoversover theoncecolonizedworld.Eventhegreatestfiguresofthe struggleagainsttotalitarianism—WinstonChurchill,Franklin Roosevelt,andHarryTruman—supportedcrass...
