~clfctfd :Bibliography I am listing only the works that directly pertain to this biography. My own collection of well over a thousand books, which I began to acquire in the late 1940s, has been, ofcourse, useful in learning the medium and its methods, but I see no reason to waste the reader's time or mine by compiling an impressive bibliography. Needless to say, I have consulted hundreds of books by stars, directors, gossip columnists, press agentsmost of which are unindexed-and in those works now blessed with indexes I have had to do the double duty oflooking under S for Stroheim as well as V for von Stroheim! Furthermore, I have done extensive reading into the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, its social and military history as well as biographies and letters ofsome ofits principal artists such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss,Artur Schnitzler (including his plays), and others to acquaint myself with the zeitgeist. Such background material has been useful for me but not necessarily pertinent for the reader. Except for books that I make a direct reference to, they remain unlisted. As I said in the preface, the most essential information can be drawn primarily from the films and scripts and from the most accurate information provided by contemporary sources.
