18 Bede on Moonlight He gazed at the moon for years, the acres and perches of that vast landscape stranger than he imagined, throwing its orb over the earthen darkness of a lake or hanging tumescent in a sky of incalculable geometries, crescent glowing flat “like a ship”— oracular sails from northern flanks betokening whirlwinds of storm. Perhaps he looked up at the shifting shape of clouds or other omens for the elisions of a drifted body as he continued (kyrie eleison) on his fluctuating course, length and brevity fixed in the ether dissolving as he slowly went on. ...
