xix On Citations To simplify the references and to attain the most optimal available readability , this book uses citations of two types. Works that are cited only rarely or occasionally are identified in footnotes via provision of the author ’s name, brief title, publication date, and page(s). Full details for such works are provided in the list of Works Cited. Passages from frequently cited works are identified not in footnotes but in the main text, via abbreviations of various sorts. The abbreviations are clarified in entries for relevant authors in the Works Cited; in entries for authors, works cited via abbreviation appear first, followed by other works, in alphabetical order.
