Species Excluded Anemone decapefala Ard. Brendel (1887) used this binomial, which applies to a European species, for A. caroliniana. Anemone dichotoma L. This European species does not occur in Illinois, although Brendel (1887) used this binomial for A. canadensis . Anemone nemorosa L. This European species does not occur in Illinois, although Illinois botanists in the nineteenth century used this binomial for A. quinquefolia. Argemone intermedia Sweet. Jones et al. (1955) record this species from three Illinois counties, but I believe the specimens on which they are based are referable to A. albiflora. Delphinium exaltatum Ait. Although the tall larkspur was reported by Brendel in 1859 from Illinois, this is a more eastern species which does not occur in this state. Nuphar rubrodiscum Morong. This species, reported from Illinois by Pepoon in 1927 as Nymphaea rubrodiscus (Morong) Greene, could not be substantiated in this study. Nuphar sagittifolium (Walt.) Pursh. This taxon, native along the Atlantic coast from Virginia to Florida, was reported as Nymphaea sagittifolia Walt. by Jacob Schneck from the Wabash Valley in 1876. I have not been able to verify this record. Although Schneck's identifications are mostly reliable, the fact that N. sagittifolium would be far out of range in Illinois makes the report suspect. Thalictrum cornuti L. Although Mead (1946) and several other botanists during the nineteenth century listed this species from Illinois , the reports were based on misidentifications of Thalictrum dasycarpum var. hypoglaucum. Thalictrum cornuti does not occur in Illinois. Thalictrum polygamum Muhl. This is an eastern United States species not known from Illinois, although attributed to this state by early workers who were looking at T. dasycarpum var. hypoglaucum . Thalictrum purpurascens L. Most Illinois botanists used this binomial for T. dasycarpum during the nineteenth century, but this is a different species not in the northeastern United States. 245 ...
