David Kenney is a professor emeritus of political science at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. In 1969–70 he was an elected member of the Sixth Illinois Constitutional Convention. He is the author of Roll Call, Making a Modern Constitution, Basic Illinois Government, and A Political Passage, a biography of former Illinois governor William G. Stratton. From 1977 to 1984, Kenney was a member of the governor’s cabinet in Illinois as the director of the Department of Conservation. In 1984–85, he was the founding director of the Illinois State Historical Preservation Agency. He was coauthor with Robert E. Hartley of Death Underground: The Centralia and West Frankfort Mine Disasters. Robert E. Hartley is the author of Charles H. Percy: A Political Perspective, Big Jim Thompson of Illinois, Paul Powell of Illinois: A Lifelong Democrat, Lewis and Clark in the Illinois Country: The Little-Told Story, Saving Yellowstone: The President Arthur Expedition of 1883, and Paul Simon: The Political Journey of an Illinois Original. His articles have been published in the Journal of Illinois History and in Colorado Heritage Magazine. Hartley worked on newspapers in East St. Louis and Decatur for LindsaySchaub Newspapers from 1962 to 1968. He was the editor of all the organization’s newspapers from 1968 to 1979. ...
