ix Acknowledgments Writing Edna Ferber’s America has been a very long process, and I truly appreciate all of the help I received along the way. Cassie Young undertook much of the archival research and sent me sheaves of Ferber correspondence and materials from archives I couldn’t visit. She read pages and pages of Ferber material and found many things I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. The outside reader from LSU Press read many versions and offered keen insight and suggestions. John Easterly first saw the promise in this project, and Margaret Lovecraft has spent much time and effort in completing the book. Stan Ivester had the unenviable task of copyediting, and his work made my writing much clearer. Gary Richards and Alison Piepmeier, just as they did when we were all in graduate school, have borne the brunt of my writing so much of this book with no other English professors around. They have read, discussed, and most importantly, listened. Eric Felten explained what Edna Ferber drank at the Algonquin Round Table (a horse’s neck) and was consistently enthusiastic about my topic. My family and friends supported my work through the long period of research, reading, and writing. Adam, Simon, and Macie offered in-house support, company, and patience with my Edna Ferber preoccupation. This book is dedicated to my mother, Rosemarie R.
