Preface served as director of public relations for Winthrop Rockefeller from May, 1964, until 1971, directing the governor's successfulreelection campaign in 1968; and participated in a major policy wayin the other campaigns. Material for this book has been gathered from several sources, including extensive interviews with Mr. Rockefeller a few months after his leaving office and before he learned he was seriously ill; interviews with Mrs. Jeannette Rockefeller, his wife during his years in public life, and interviews with some twenty-five other persons who worked for him, with him, or against him during the build-up ofhis campaign organization and while he served as governor. In addition to these sources, Mr. Rockefeller made available to me the materials contained in his Archives —correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings , tape-recorded speeches, and other such things relating to his public life. Opinion surveys by several pollsters, including Joe Belden of Dallas, Texas, and Eugene Newsom of Little Rock, Arkansas, have also been used extensively ; these documents are likewise housed in theArchives .
