acknowledgments It has been a long road since I took the belated decision to attend university in Havana some fifteen years ago. Many people have come to and gone from my life during this time. Before I begin the long list of acknowledgments that will follow, I would like to say that I am deeply grateful to all those who helped me in one way or another and who will not be mentioned here due to reasons of space or bad memory. I would like to start by recognizing the continuous encouragement I received from professors and fellow students at the university of Havana. Many of them have had a lasting impact on my professional and personal maturity. at the Museum of the city of Havana, I had the opportunity to spend nine amazing years working with the most professional and kindhearted people I have ever met.
