Our most sincere thanks go to the contributing authors, whose incisive and original reflections compel us to share their insights with the reader. As with many projects,this one too began with a day of reflection in 2007,organized by Carrie Tarr in conjunction with “Beur Is Beautiful,” a retrospective she curated for ArteEast’s CinemaEast Film Festival in New York City. We thank Livia Alexander and Rasha Salti of ArteEast and the French Cultural Services for organizing and cohosting the festival under the aegis of which we first met. To Carrie, we are very thankful not only for her indefatigable work as a pioneer in the field but also for her generosity and effort in bringing together scholars as well as filmmakers, allowing us to engage with the general public. Her encouragement was instrumental in urging us to undertake this project.
