As described above, this book grew out of the Forum on Ethical Challenges in Biomedical Research and Practice, initiated and sponsored by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation with additional and very welcome support from the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Together, these nonprofit organizations contributed generously to the exploration of a topic of vital interest to medical, patient, and policy communities. Neen Hunt, the president of the Lasker Foundation, deserves special credit for envisioning the forum and shepherding it to completion.
