165 q Chapter 5 GertrudeSteinand“IndividualAnything” Gertrude Stein’s experimental text The Making ofAmericans,whichshewroteintermittentlyfrom1903through1911, firmlysituatesherwithintheimmigrationdebatesoftheturnofthecentury (itwasbasedonherownfamily’simmigrantheritage).TheMakingof Americans,publishedin1925,representsaparadigmaticmelting-pottext:in it,astoryofimmigrationbecomestheoccasionforStein’sradicalmodernist deformationofconventionalnarratives.Thenovelalsotakesonacentral problemofmelting-potthinking:theindispensabilityoftheindividualto thesetheoriesofculturalmixtureandmerging.WhileJames,Johnson,and Catheralltouchedonthisproblem,Steinfocusedmoresustainedlyonit. Thischapterwilltraceherparticularconcernoverthewaysthattheformal innovativenessofthemeltingpotwasboundtothefigureoftheindividual. Especiallyatthebeginningofhercareer,Steindemonstratedawillingness toaccepttheindividualasphilosophicalandaestheticbasisofmelting-pot creativity;however,evenfromherearliestworkshedidnothesitatetoquery whetherthephilosophicalandaestheticpromiseofthemeltingpotjustified sucharelianceontheproblematicfigureoftheindividual.Herlaterwork isfarmoredamningaboutthewaysindividualbeing,tohermind,fetters melting-potinnovation. TheMakingofAmericanssuggestssomeofthewaysinwhichStein’swork putsspecialpressureontheindividual-form.Thisearlynovelconsidershow 166 MELTING-POT MODERNISM domesticityandthemarketserveasmeanstomakeAmericans,ortoincorporate individualsintosystemsputativelyresponsivetotheindependenceand mobilityofthoseindividuals.TheMakingofAmericansfindstheunspoken logicalbasisofmelting-potideasofmobilityintheindividual’sfreedomof contract( bothmaritalandeconomic).Theconventional“plot”ofTheMaking ofAmericans(whichisprogressivelysubmergedunderStein’sformalexperimentation )concernsfinancialsuccessandmarriage,themarkersofindividual assimilationinsomanyaccountsofimmigration.InStein’shands, however,narrativesofmarketandmiddle-classhomeineffectuallypunctuate arelentlessexerciseinclassification,onewhoseformevokestheisolationof theindividualinProgressive-eraculture.Thiseconomicindividualcirculates fromTheMakingofAmericansthroughmuchofStein’sliteraryproduction, constitutinghermostenduringengagementwiththeaestheticandphilosophical problemsofthemeltingpot. Asenseoftheindividualasnecessarily,howeveruneasily,embeddedwithin theinterlockingsystemsofmarketanddomesticitywasbynomeanspeculiar totheProgressive-eraUnitedStates.1 However,acceptanceofthisideological formation,howeverambivalent,mightbesaidtoconstitutethetraditionalist parametersforProgressivereform— thatis,itseparatesreformfromradicalism .Eventhemostsociallyconsciousmelting-potProgressives,suchasJane AddamsandJohnDewey,castmelting-potassimilationasanindividualized process.Indoingso,theyfirmlylocatedthemelting-potparadigmwithinthe familiarintersectingsystemsofamodifiedfreemarketandthehome— for individualityitselfasimaginedbyAddamsandDeweywaslogicallyfounded intheeconomy.Theywerehardlyaloneinthis.Ifthepromiseoflaborand thedreamoffinancialindependencedrewimmigrantstotheUnitedStates, thehomewasunderstoodastheplacewheretheseindividualsclaimedintimate bondsandexperiencesthatelevatedthemaboveindustrialautomatons: thetwospheresworkedinconcerttoconstitutemelting-potindividuality.
