vii Acknowledgments This volume is a selection of contributions from the international conference “Cultural Identities and Media Representations,”held at the University of Constance in September 2001. Our first thanks goes to the members of the Collaborative Research Center 511, Literature and Anthropology, of the University of Constance, who generously sponsored this project and made it possible to bring together scholars from the most distant parts of the world. The final outcome of this volume is, of course, to the credit of the participants of the conference themselves, and we owe them profound thanks for their stimulating papers and their friendly and, most of all, patient cooperation.
