201 Appendix on Data The quantitative data used throughout this book are from four layers: cross-­ national, provincial, city, and zone-­ level data sets. In particular, the three subnational data sets were constructed based on numerous primary sources from fieldwork interviews, news sources, and official statistics in China. The cross-­ national data set used in chapter 2 contains national economic and political data for 135 developing countries in the period between 1980 and 2008.
