Note on Transliteration and Translation The transliterations in this book follow both the Library of Congress system and conventions used in nonspecialist publications. A few first names have been anglicized (Aleksandr has become Alexander). Last names have been rendered in the form most familiar to western readers (Butashevich-Petrashevskii has become Petrashevsky). Spellings in the endnotes and bibliography all cohere with the Library of Congress system. Translations are mine unless otherwise indicated.
