APPENDIX K Dale Evans Rogers's Inspirational Books Between 1953 and 2000 Dale Evans published twenty-eight books, works mainly of a spiritual nature. The books deal with a variety of topics ranging from the death of three of the Rogers's children to such issues as the women's movement, American youth, aging, Christmas, patriotism, celebrity or hero worship, child abuse, and values. Evans approaches all of these issues from a Christian perspective. In addition to providing a spiritual viewpoint, Evans fills the books with autobiographical information and stories about the Rogers family. Woman at the Well, Dale: My Personal Picture Album, and In the Hands o/the Potter all contain personal information. Angel Unaware, Dearest Debbie, and A Salute to Sandy reveal the personal impact that the death of three children had upon Evans and her family. Evans wrote ten of the works with the assistance of co-authors. Many of the publications were best sellers in the spiritual or Christian market. Angel Unaware has sold more than a million copies and remains in print more than fifty years after its initial publication. Writing and publishing has been an important element of Evans's professional career. Although the nature of the books do not relate specifically to her life as a western entertainer and movie star, her effort and that of her husband Roy Rogers to include Christian spiritual themes in their public performances, ties these two aspects of her career together. Moreover, as Evans shifted her performances from that of a western personality to one in which she presented religious concerts and Christian testimony , she maintained her "Queen of the West" persona. This collection of prayers for children includes, among others, those of Alexander Pope, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Martin Luther, Elsa Ruth Nast, Christina Rossetti, and Dale Evans. Eleanor Dart's illustrations are oriented toward children and have a western flavor with scenes of deserts, cacti, horses, and children in western wear. To My Son: Faith at Our House (Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell, 1957) [142 p.]. In a series of letters to her son, Tom Fox, Evans writes about family events, professional activities, and spiritual beliefs. Evans presents the meaning of Christmas in both its spiritual and worldly aspects. While she acknowledges the meaning and importance of presents, Christmas trees, and Santa Claus, she emphasizes the significance of family, friends, and the charity that people feel for one another during the Christmas season.
