315 Glossary The following is a glossary of the most important terms used in the text, giving pinyin romanization, standard Chinese, and the English translation, and explanations when necessary. Please note that personal names are not included, nor are most cities or general historical terms. Except for the “Chang’an Avenue” terms, all terms are listed alphabetically. Chang’an Avenue (Chang’an Jie) 长安街 The entire east-west thoroughfare of Beijing, including both Chang’an Avenue proper and its east and west extensions. Today this long thoroughfare is referred to as the “Hundred-Li Long Avenue” 百里长街. Chang’an Avenue is not a static thoroughfare created at one time. Instead, it has grown and experienced many changes over time, and the term “Chang’an Avenue” has been used to refer to different sections of this street in different historical periods. The following naming system is used throughout this book in order to create clear definitions and avoid confusion. The ordering of the terms generally follows the historical development of the avenue, in such a way that the definitions of later terms are built on earlier ones. historic East Chang’an Avenue (Lishi Dong Chang’an Jie) 历史东长安街 Between Dongdan and Nanheyan Streets.
