I’ve been exceptionally lucky. Over the years, I’ve met people I’ve admired and who have helped me grow as a person and scholar. I am deeply grateful to many members of the uci for their time and friendship, but especially to Tito, Ana, Agustín, Carmen, and Hermano Javier. Others in Mexico who have given generously of their time include Sofía de la Peña, Juan Manuel Ramírez Sáiz, Jorge Alonso, Mercedes González de la Rocha, Felipe Alatorre, Carlos Peralta, José Bautista, Alfredo Lopez, the de Borbolla family, and Agustín Escobar. Through their teaching and commitment to scholarship, Diane Mitsch Bush, Stephen Mumme, Jack Goldstone, and Jan Gouldner have been models to emulate. John Walton’s scholarship, integrity, and instruction in the craft of sociology has had a huge influence on me, as has that of Fred Block. Martin Tolich has helped me understand how to be an engaged scholar. Most importantly , my friend Steve Shulman has been an example of how to commit to scholarship, while refusing to leave the rest of life behind. Others have spent their time reading my work, talking to me, sharpening my argument where I was right, and showing me where I was wrong. Much of their written work has affected me in immeasurable ways. Frances Fox Piven is a constant inspiration. Others who have deeply influenced me include Alejandro Portes, Robert Gay, Gareth Jones, George Pasdirtz, Robert Gorman, Sherry Cable, Harry Dahms, Michael Handelsman, Amparo Menéndez-Carrión, Judith Adler Hellman, Miguel Angel Centeno, Sylvia Chant, Diane Davis, Cory Blad, Julie Stewart, Denise Cobb, Scott Frey, Chip Hastings, Cecilia Menjívar, Victoria Johnson, Robert Olson, Richard Olson, Javier Auyero, Saskia Sassen, Cathy Walsh, Charlie Hale, Jon Roper, Steve McVeigh, Charlie Walker, and Paul Gellert.
