Many people have assisted with the production of this book. Jules Lubbock first suggested that I study Alberti, and he remained an excellent and supportive advisor thereafter.Thomas Puttfarken and David Hemsoll both read my earliest work and offered constructive suggestions. Jo Wallace Hadrill helped me a great deal with my Latin, and Paul Gwynne critiqued some of my ideas. My colleagues in the Department of Art History and Theory at The University of Essex have given me useful advice and assistance. Professor Peter Vergo has been a supportive head of department, granting me the time to bring the manuscript to completion. A Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentship allowed me to spend time in Rome; although the grant was for a different project, I continued to work on Alberti while there.
