This book is the outcome of fifteen years of data gathering and research led by Zvi Eckstein and Yoram Weiss. The project includes several research papers and the PhD dissertations of Chemi Gotlibovski (1997) and Sarit Cohen Goldner (2002), most of which are included in this book. The data and original papers are available on request. Financial support for the project came from a number of sources: the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development grants 1 R01 HD34716-01 and 5 R01 HD34671-03; the German–Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development grant I-084-118.02/95; and the Israel Science Foundation grant 884/01. Smaller grants were received from: the John M. Olin Foundation through a grant to the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and State at the University of Chicago; the Pinhas Sapir Center for Development at Tel Aviv University ; the Maurice Falk Institute for Economic Research in Israel; the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption; and the Manpower Planning Authority of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Labor.
