Historically method and study materials have not been written exclusively for the euphonium. The majority of study methods were written in the twentieth century for the combination of trombone /baritone horn (euphonium). Since the euphonium and baritone horn commonly read both bass and treble clefs, many trumpet and cornet methods were also used. In addition to utilizing methods from other brass instruments, study materials were also borrowed from the violoncello and bassoon. This chapter will include materials that were written with euphonium/ baritone horn specifically mentioned in the title or supporting materials. A few band methods have also been included, especially those that include CD examples of euphonium playing for the student. There are methods published for the French tuba and saxhorn, which are similar instruments to the euphonium. Some but not all of these methods are included in this chapter. Further information can be found in the 1994 Indiana Press publication French Music for Low Brass Instruments: An Annotated Bibliography written by J. Mark Thompson. In the past ten years there has been a growth of method books and especially etude study books specifically written for the euphonium. The majority of these materials have been generated in response to competitions sponsored by the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association (now named the International Tuba-Euphonium Association [ITEA]). A debt of gratitude is due to the ITEA for sponsoring several specific euphonium etude competitions for all levels. Catalogs from various music publishers and online sources were used in preparing this chapter , in addition to the extensive music library at the University of North Texas and the personal library of Brian Bowman. The inclusion of many older items is important in documenting early methods for the euphonium. Many of these early materials may be permanently out of print. Availability of all the materials has been verified where possible and permanently out of print notations have been used. However, lack of an out of print notation does not guarantee that the item is currently available. The prices given are current as of time of verification and usually given in U.S. currency. For out of print materials or where no other source is given, the cover price on the item is listed. Items without notation and/or with incomplete bibliographic information were not made available to the editor for examination. Particular thanks go to the Tuba-Euphonium Press and David Miles for being the major publisher of specific materials for the euphonium during the last quarter of the twentieth century.
