Appendix C Birthplace of HCC Parents In 1901 HCC managers began asking parents where they had been born, reflecting a growing concern with increased African American migration to the city of Pittsburgh. A statistical analysis of HCC admission logs from 1901 through 1929 shows that the orphanage served a significant number of northern-born families, but the bulk of the clientele had migrated from the Upper South, especially from the state of Virginia. There was no appreciable difference between men’s and women’s migration patterns, so the numbers here reflect total parents from each region.
