summary
The Marx/Engels Collected Works is the largest collection of translations of the complete works of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels covering the period 1835-1895. The 50 volumes contain all the written works of Marx and Engels including formerly unpublished manuscripts and letters. The volumes are organised into three groups: (1) philosophical, historical, political, economic and other works, in chronological order; (2) Marx’s Capital with his preliminary versions and works directly connected with it, particularly the Economic Manuscripts of 1857-58, better known under the editorial heading Grundisse der Kritik der Politischen Okonomie ; (3) the letters of Marx and Engels which are extremely rich in theoretical content and provide an indispensable source for the study of the biographies of Marx and Engels. This digital collection gives scholars access to the complete oeuvre in a fully searchable format.
Volume 39 contains the letters of Marx and Engels to each other and to third persons from 1852 to 1855. The letters reflect the theoretical preoccupations of Marx and Engels during the period that followed the defeat of the 1848-49 revolution. The letters illustrate the harsh privations and trials of the period and throw light on various aspects of their studies and literary work as well as their co-operation and collaboration as political journalists. The letters illustrate the extensive contacts that Marx and Engels maintained with proletarian circles across Europe, the USA and other countries and their influence on the working-class movement and their contributions to the working-class press.
The letters give a vivid impression of the vigorous action by Marx and Engels in defence of the active members of the Communist League who were victimised by police and judicial persecution, and they throw light on the background against which Marx wrote his pamphlet Revelations Concerning the Communist Trial in Cologne.
