Roelef Van den Broek. Studies in Gnosticism and Alexandrian Christianity. Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies 39. Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1996. Pp. ix + 300. $106.50.

This volume contains fifteen essays, which are divided into two parts. The first ten deal with Gnosticism, while the latter five deal with Alexandrian Christianity. This follows Van den Broek’s long-held belief that “Gnosticism and the beginnings of Alexandrian Christianity are closely connected” (p. vii). The Nag Hammadi discoveries have furthered the study of both.

The essays date from 1972 to 1995; twelve are in English and three in German. The range is considerable and includes such diverse figures as Aristides, Apuleius, Origen, and the Cathars. This book was published on the occasion of Van den Broek’s retirement as professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Utrecht. It represents a fitting tribute to his long career. Scholars will find this volume a useful addition to their libraries.
