ABSTRACT:
Why did we find a wild mix of Messianic rabbis, shofars, and other Christian-appropriated Jewish symbols conspicuously featured in the Christian-led, pro-Trump Jericho Marches and also at the January 6th Capitol Riot? Much of the scholarship to date regarding Messianic Judaism has focused on adjudicating the movement’s claims to Jewish identity, but this article argues that, to understand the role of Messianic Judaism in the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021, we must look at the Christian origins of the Messianic movement in the 1970s as an Independent Charismatic style of Christianity. It also demonstrates how, since the 1980s, Messianic Judaism has become enmeshed with the New Apostolic Reformation and other Charismatic apostolic networks that played such a prominent role in the Christian mobilization for January 6th.
