Abstract

Abstract:

“[T]he miser-merman, Wisdom, revealed his hoarded heaps.” The following Herman Melville letters have been snatched from the clenched hands of the miser-merman of Davy Jones. There are undoubtedly many more to be grasped. These letters are to an omnium-gatherum of lawyers, a stock broker, students, editors, a publisher, Secretaries of State, and autograph hunters. The letters, long and short, fill lacunae in Melville’s life.
