Abstract:
“Night but Unlike Night” A short lyric verse poem in which a speaker sees the woodpecker he’s been only hearing for weeks and goes on to reflect on the power and the futility of communication, the limits of speech, hunger, desire, the struggle to continue living.
“Peel the Black Walnut . . .” A lyric verse poem in which a speaker reflects on the change of seasons, his desire to resist loss, the fragility of love, the death of loved ones, and the beauty inherent in continuing to struggle for life.
