Hiring Out: Enslaved Black Building Artisans in North Carolina

Central to the construction of much of the architecture of the antebellum South were enslaved artisans in every building trade. A large proportion of these men were hired out as part of an economic system that operated in most slaveholding states, but their importance has seldom been addressed. Using North Carolina as an example, this article explores their work and their experiences.
