Abstract

Abstract:

One way scholars research advertising’s history and place in society and culture is through the study of archival materials. Some universities and organizations have preserved documents and objects for scholars and students to use in their research and learning about advertising. This Advertising in the Classroom article discusses how Duke University’s John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History makes its archival collections available for teaching. Joshua Larkin Rowley, one of the Hartman Center’s reference archivists, talks about how he works with faculty to make library collections a central part of students’ learning experience. He shares more about how he uses university library collections to facilitate classes and research workshops. He also gives advice on how instructors can work closely with librarians and archivists to inspire students to be excited about conducting archival research in person.
