Abstract:
Located only a block from the terminus of the Santa Fe Trail, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, stands at the crossroads of one of the most culturally diverse regions of North America. The cathedral itself, as well as the surrounding grounds, incorporates many of these cultural influences, ranging from Pueblo and Native American to Spanish, Hispanic, Anglo, and the French cultural sensibilities of the first archbishop, Jean-Baptiste Lamy, immortalized as Jean Latour in Willa Cather's novel Death Comes for the Archbishop.
