Two Roses—like the surrounding body of work in Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance, curated by Kilolo Luckett; organized and toured by The Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, PA; and on view at the Boise Art Museum in Boise, ID from June 11, 2022 through September 18, 2022, and Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem, NC from February 17, 2023 through May 14, 2023—explores Black American labor and the importance of historically Black colleges and universities (hbcus). This work is inspired by an image from the Harbison Agricultural College Photograph Collection, South Caroliniana Library, University of South Carolina Libraries.
