Grappling with the Fragmentations: Black Feminisms, African Feminisms and the Possibilities of Black Geographies in Canada

This essay engages with the question of Black studies in Canada vis-à-vis African studies. To address this question, I explore the unsatisfactory distinctions I have made between African feminisms and Black feminisms because they dangerously replicate the colonial division of humanity. As such, I focus on the distinction to think through how we can imagine the future of Black studies in Canada. In so doing, I consider correspondences and interactions that I have been engaged in as spaces where challenging thinking happens in ways that negotiate, rethink, and unsettle institutional and disciplinary limits. I ponder the possibility of not thinking singularly about the subject of Black studies and moving toward a space where we can hold sight of our differences.

Le présent essai traite de la question des études noires au Canada par rapport aux études africaines. À cette fin, l'auteure analyse les distinctions insatisfaisantes qu'elle a faites entre les féminismes africains et les féminismes noirs, car celles-ci reproduisent dangereusement la division colonialiste de l'humanité. Elle se concentre sur cette distinction pour imaginer l'avenir des études noires au Canada. Ce faisant, elle considère les correspondances et les interactions qu'elle a eues comme des espaces où une pensée neuve a permis de négocier, de repenser et de déstabiliser les limites institutionnelles et disciplinaires. L'auteure réfléchit à la possibilité de ne pas traiter isolément les études sur les Noirs et d'adopter une vision qui tienne compte des divergences de vues.
