Apa Talks to Me About His Dreams

A rooster crows cruellyoutside my father's windowand for a few faded moments

he is a lanky boy on the ranchowalking alongside his pet cow Palomashooing prideful roosters from his mother's feet.

Abuela Mariana passed away years ago, peacefully, we hope, pero estamos aquiy nomas sabemos que nos dicen

because I never truly met my abuela, only ever seen her in the photo albumsand the funeral portraits from my prima's Facebook

so I wonder about her in my father's dreamsand if those moments make up for the goodbyeshe has lost and has missed back home. [End Page 108]

Postcard to L. Adame on the Day the World Ends

Oh my dear mother, why waste any time worrying about our last few days when the birds still fly over the crumbling Buttes without a care in the world? Today, I found myself outside, sitting cross-legged in Bidwell Park, watching people swim in the creek, drifting on their backs, laughing. Something about the way they drifted reminded me of flying, the weightlessness following an intentional release. For a split second, the sun seemed to shake as if it was looking upon us all one last time, shining and laughing right back in our faces. Oh, I'll miss you. If I can, I will. [End Page 109]
