Abstract

Abstract:

From the late 1950s until the present the Canadian missionary Dr. Frank W. Schofield and his compatriots have been commemorated in South Korea—ostensibly to honor them for the struggles they waged against the Japanese colonial government on behalf of Koreans in the wake of the suppression of the March First Independence Movement of 1919 and the Kando Massacres of 1920. This article examines the primary South Korean and Canadian stakeholders involved in the commemoration activities to elucidate their motivations and thus contribute to our knowledge of the politics of memory in South Korea and Canadian-South Korean relations.
