Abstract:
Twelve-step programs and group psychotherapy are both considered effective, and many clinicians consider the combination the gold standard for treating individuals who struggle with addictive processes. Exploring the similarities and differences between these two modalities helps us appreciate the contribution of each system, design comprehensive and effective treatment plans for patients, and better understand the process of recovery. Moreover, the conversation introduces the uninitiated psychotherapist to basic principles of addiction and recovery, in particular, 12-step recovery. For those already familiar with addiction and 12-step recovery, the discussion clarifies salient recovery concepts and interventions.
